Mental Math Tricks

Impress people and save time โ€” these tricks let you calculate faster than reaching for a calculator.

Why Mental Math Matters

Your phone has a calculator โ€” so why bother? Because mental math:

  • Is faster for everyday calculations (tips, discounts, estimating)
  • Helps you spot errors in calculator results
  • Improves number sense and mathematical intuition
  • Impresses people (seriously)

Multiplying by 5

Instead of ร—5, do รท2 then ร—10 (or ร—10 then รท2).

Example 1: 48 ร— 5 โ†’ 48/2 = 24 โ†’ 24 ร— 10 = 240

Example 2: 136 ร— 5 โ†’ 136/2 = 68 โ†’ 68 ร— 10 = 680

Multiplying by 9

Multiply by 10, then subtract the number once.

Example 3: 37 ร— 9 โ†’ 37 ร— 10 - 37 = 370 - 37 = 333

Example 4: 56 ร— 9 โ†’ 560 - 56 = 504

Multiplying by 11

For two-digit numbers: put the sum of the digits in the middle.

Example 5: 36 ร— 11 โ†’ 3_(3+6)_6 = 3_9_6 = 396

Example 6: 72 ร— 11 โ†’ 7_(7+2)_2 = 7_9_2 = 792

If the sum is โ‰ฅ10, carry: 85 ร— 11 โ†’ 8_(13)_5 โ†’ 9_3_5 = 935

Multiplying by 25

Divide by 4, then ร—100.

Example 7: 32 ร— 25 โ†’ 32/4 = 8 โ†’ 8 ร— 100 = 800

Example 8: 48 ร— 25 โ†’ 48/4 = 12 โ†’ 12 ร— 100 = 1,200

Multiplying by 99 or 999

Multiply by 100 (or 1000), subtract the number.

Example 9: 45 ร— 99 โ†’ 4,500 - 45 = 4,455

Example 10: 7 ร— 999 โ†’ 7,000 - 7 = 6,993

Squaring Numbers Ending in 5

Take the tens digit, multiply by (itself + 1), append 25.

Example 11: 35ยฒ โ†’ 3 ร— 4 = 12 โ†’ 1,225

Example 12: 85ยฒ โ†’ 8 ร— 9 = 72 โ†’ 7,225

Example 13: 65ยฒ โ†’ 6 ร— 7 = 42 โ†’ 4,225

Percentage Shortcuts

The 10% Foundation

Everything builds from 10% (just move the decimal):

  • 10% of $85 = $8.50
  • 5% = half of 10%: $4.25
  • 15% = 10% + 5%: $8.50 + $4.25 = $12.75
  • 20% = 10% ร— 2: $17.00
  • 1% = move decimal 2 places: $0.85
  • 7% = 5% + 1% + 1%: $4.25 + $0.85 + $0.85 = $5.95

The Flip Trick

X% of Y = Y% of X. So 8% of 50 = 50% of 8 = 4. Much easier!

4% of 75 = 75% of 4 = 3. Way simpler to calculate.

Breaking Numbers Apart

Split hard multiplications into easy ones using the distributive property.

Example 14: 23 ร— 7 โ†’ (20 ร— 7) + (3 ร— 7) = 140 + 21 = 161

Example 15: 47 ร— 6 โ†’ (50 ร— 6) - (3 ร— 6) = 300 - 18 = 282

Round and Adjust

Round to a friendly number, calculate, then adjust.

Example 16: 298 + 47 โ†’ 300 + 47 - 2 = 345

Example 17: 53 ร— 4 โ†’ 50 ร— 4 + 3 ร— 4 = 200 + 12 = 212

Division Shortcuts

  • รท5: Multiply by 2, then รท10. 145 รท 5 โ†’ 290 รท 10 = 29
  • รท4: Halve twice. 92 รท 4 โ†’ 46 โ†’ 23
  • รท8: Halve three times. 96 รท 8 โ†’ 48 โ†’ 24 โ†’ 12
  • รท25: Multiply by 4, then รท100. 175 รท 25 โ†’ 700 รท 100 = 7

Practice Makes Speed

Start with these daily habits:

  • Calculate tips in your head instead of using an app
  • Estimate grocery totals while shopping
  • Do mental math with license plate numbers (add them, multiply digits)
  • Play mental math games โ€” our Speed Math game is great for this!

๐ŸŽฏ Try It Yourself

Test your understanding with these practice problems.

1. Use a trick to quickly calculate: 25 ร— 48

๐Ÿ’ก Hint: 25 ร— 48 = 25 ร— 4 ร— 12 = 100 ร— 12

2. What is 15% of $60? (Do it in your head)

๐Ÿ’ก Hint: 10% = $6, 5% = $3, total = $9

3. Calculate: 99 ร— 7

๐Ÿ’ก Hint: 100 ร— 7 = 700, minus 1 ร— 7 = 7. So 700 - 7

4. What is 18 ร— 5?

๐Ÿ’ก Hint: Half of 18 = 9, then ร— 10 = 90

5. Calculate: 43 ร— 11

๐Ÿ’ก Hint: 4_3, put 4+3=7 in the middle: 473

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes

  • โœ—Trying to memorize tricks without understanding WHY they work โ€” understanding makes them stick and lets you adapt.
  • โœ—Using the ร—11 shortcut for two-digit numbers where digits sum to more than 9 without carrying. 85 ร— 11: 8_(8+5=13)_5 โ†’ need to carry: 935.
  • โœ—Rounding both numbers in the same direction, making the estimate too high or too low. Round one up and one down.
  • โœ—Trying to do too many steps in your head at once. Break into 2-3 simple steps max.
  • โœ—Not practicing regularly. Mental math is like a muscle โ€” use it or lose it.

๐ŸŒ Real Life Example

Tipping at a Restaurant

Bill: $73.50. For 20% tip: move decimal โ†’ $7.35 (that's 10%), double it โ†’ $14.70. For 15%: $7.35 + half of $7.35 ($3.68) โ‰ˆ $11.03. For 25%: quarter of $73.50 โ†’ half of half โ†’ $73.50/2 = $36.75/2 = $18.38. You can calculate any tip in seconds without pulling out your phone.

๐Ÿ’ก Key Takeaway

Mental math isn't about being a genius โ€” it's about using clever shortcuts. The core strategies are: break numbers apart, use friendly numbers (10, 100, 25), round and adjust, and leverage relationships between operations. Practice 5 minutes a day and you'll be surprisingly fast within a month.
